Feeding Cats

Feeding Cats

– particular, picky or just misunderstood?

I find cats and their behaviour fascinating. They make us chuckle every day as we wonder why they are sitting in the lid of the board game you just put to one side, or why they always go to the other side of the water bowl to have a drink.

Much of their weird and wonderful repertoire of behaviour stems from millennia of evolution. Just because we’ve domesticated them in relatively recent times, doesn’t mean they don’t have most, if not all, of those innate drives to act a certain way because of their ancestors.

Having food and water is one of the most basic physical welfare needs of all animals, cats included, but the way we often give food and water to cats is contrary to what they might prefer. Read on to find out how you can make your cat feel more at ease when it comes to the seemingly simple act of providing these basic staples.

Finally…

Even if you only have one cat, ideally you should have two water and food bowls. This way if you have a visitor (usually children!) or you’re doing something like vacuuming that your cat finds stressful, they can still access their food and water in a different part of the house.

These can be difficult steps to implement for many owners. If you already have one or more cats, doing as much as you can to implement these changes could make a huge difference to the physical and mental health of your cat. If you’re thinking about getting a cat, a single cat will almost certainly be happier than several cats. Think carefully about whether you can meet these particular needs, as well as their other needs such as scratching and climbing. It’s always better to be honest with ourselves and try to make responsible choices when it comes to the animals in our lives, than take on a pet that can’t have their best life possible.
