In Continuing Education
Over the last few years, I have been involved with many conferences and committees. During discussions around ethics and welfare streams and presentations I started to wonder why, as vets, we see animal welfare as separate from other clinical education. In fact, once, when discussing getting animal welfare into surgeon training, someone said, “It’s not animal welfare, it’s clinical decision-making”.
Surely every clinical decision we make is for the best outcome for the welfare of the animal. I would love as many speakers as possible to get this message into their talks, regardless of whether they are speaking in a welfare stream or not. Below you will find an ethical considerations slide that you can use in your talks and add your own logo. There are also examples of how speakers have used this already.
Ethical Considerations Slides
The idea behind these slides is simple; animal welfare is the foundation of everything we do as veterinary professionals. Many conferences now incorporate an ethics and welfare stream, which is absolutely the right thing to do, but shouldn’t all continuing education have animal welfare and ethical decision-making at its core?
Speakers are often given template slides to use for conferences and told that they must include a conflicts of interest slide. I would like to encourage speakers at every conference to insert the ethical decision-making slide into their talk as well.
It’s your choice where it goes and the details you care to fill in. The goal is that the vets who feel the need to prioritise clinical CE/CPD over the ethics and welfare stream, are reminded in every presentation that clinical decision-making is all about ethics and welfare. After all, “Animal welfare is the foundation of veterinary medicine and surgery and should be considered an integral part of everything we do.”
If you would like the slides just complete the form below and we can send you the templates. Thank you in advance.
